Police sources revealed that the key suspect in RG Kar rape case, Sanjay Roy, had visited two brothels in the city's notorious red-light district, Sonagachi, on the night of the crime. Sanjay Roy, who served as a civic volunteer at the hospital, reportedly consumed alcohol before heading to the brothels on August 8. Afterward, Roy was captured on CCTV entering the hospital’s seminar hall past midnight, where the junior doctor had gone to sleep.
The disturbing case has triggered nationwide protests, with thousands taking to the streets, especially in Kolkata, demanding justice. Amid the uproar, the West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe potential financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College during the tenure of its former principal, Sandip Ghosh.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case, with a focus on unraveling the connections between Sanjay Roy and Anup Dutta, an assistant sub-inspector with the Kolkata Police. Dutta is believed to have close ties to Roy, granting the latter unchecked access to police barracks and various facilities at RG Kar Medical College. The CBI has unearthed several photographs showing Dutta and Roy together, raising more questions about the extent of Dutta’s involvement. As the investigation deepens, Dutta has been seen evading the media, running towards the CBI office to avoid reporters’ questions about his relationship with the accused.
